The claim that Stephen Shore is one of the last photographic heroes is definitely accurate, for me, at least.
I’m not sure why, but when I saw the recent catalog he shot for Urban Outfitters, I was slightly depressed.
I guess a part of me wasn’t happy about his work being “shared” with the Urban Outfitters crowd… which I consider to be a veritable plague of hipster locusts.
In the end though, I’m glad they went to the source, instead of a derivative.
In an industry where photographers’ images are being used without permission on a regular basis nowadays, I would really like to know if Phaidon has permission to use The Album Leaf’s, “Window” in this video?
And if Phaidon does not have permission to use the song, then it would be extremely hypocritical of us to attack someone for using a photographer’s photo without permission (something I’m very much against), but allow someone to use unlicensed music for their interview or multimedia project (something I’m also against), and say nothing about it.
Yes, I did think of that. Which, is why I asked if Phaidon had permission to use the song in such a modest Youtube video? A simple yes is not sufficient either. Actual proof would be nice.
But if permission was granted, then that’s great! Because that means whoever made this video had the decency to see if they could use the music. Which is something many people aren’t doing these days for their videos, and nobody seems to really care.
Photographers and musicians need to stick together regarding their work being used without permission.
is it true his parents donated money to the museum in the early 70’s that gave him his first break to have a show or part of an exhibit there?
boring work and boring person, no talent no genius , i am not a hater but someone who calls a spade a spade when i see the deck
regardless of how stephen got his break into the art scene nothing can take away from the fact that he has a sensitive eye, which can be traced throughout his work.
I found your website/blog today! Last night I was going through some old issues of PDN and came across the March 2008 issue in which you were interviewd. You have a great blog and rather fun to read and sure I’ll be comming back. Sometimes events follow in such an organized manor that on the face of it, looks like a series of chained coincidences. Strangley, I have been comming across various Articles and Books and interviews and past exhibition listings ALL related to Steven Shore, So when I decide to look your blog up this morning, what do i see! Steven Shore’s YouTube Phaidon Interview on your home page! there is amethod to the madness and I love it! All is well.

Amazing . Whenever I hear people like Stephen talk , it reminds me of how much of a young smartass photographer I am ….

Come on, “Average people who weren’t photographers”. Who’s he kidding?
Well it would appear to be lots of people including the average.
Stephen Shore could take a photograph of a tea bag in an empty sink and convince people it’s art.
