McCullin has spent many years battling the psychological after effects of war, trying to balance the quest for excellence in his work with the horrors he’s witnessed.

“It really messes you up,” he said. “It’s incomprehensible the way human beings can slaughter each other in front of you. And you take it home with you. And it’s like you haven’t cleaned your teeth in several months, it leaves a bad taste in your mouth.”

  1. You guys really need to read the interview between McCullin and Eugene Richards in the new PDN. Srsly. It’s onw of the most awkward and amazing interviews I’ve ever read.
I saw McCullin speak at the Barbicon gallery in London in like 97. He’s the last of a breed. Srsly. When someone asks if he ever thinks of the young, albino starving child he shot in Biafra, McCullin said. “He touches my arm every time I’m in the darkroom. I had to have an assistant print for me for a bit.”

  2. When seen first hand (war), you get it (McCullin’s torment). Yeahhhhhhhhh.
