An oil painting of a burning bank that sparked a pair of Los Angeles police investigations also ignited an international auction frenzy. Artist Alex Schaefer has sold the 22-by-28-inch canvas depicting a Chase Bank branch in Van Nuys going up in flames to a German collector for $25,200.

  1. No image? I’m dying to see it!

  2. I think the artist who painted it was also hassled by the cops

  3. He was in the news a couple of weeks back if I remember correctly. I think the thing is poignant is that hew was hassled by the cops which in this age as photographers gets the dander up. we react and so does the public.

Personally I thought and still thinks that is was a great media ploy to create the controversy even though I don’t think his paintings don’t fit what I like. They are like painting flames on a old school muscle car.

    • Controversy is great for generating PR. I remember that news item.

  4. The cops don’t really understand social commentary and symbolism, do they?
