'I think the best decision I ever made was to start shooting for myself, to start doing what I wanted to do the way I wanted to do it, and not to worry about satisfying anyone else but myself.'

Good job, 'cos if you're in it for the money...... well I know you don't need to be told the rest. Isn't it amazing how you can work your way up into the top section of a professional to find there is still so much competition there that you never actually get the call, you just sit on someone's list as a maybe.

@ APE: thank again for the interview...it beats a certain "conscientious" Euro style that takes a day to get through!

gee on wi' yersel' Mr. H.! (as my scottish friend Stewart would say)
@ 9. It's probably the reason you don't get the British version of The Office.
There is MUCH humo(u)r in H's work. Alas, most of it is lost on American editors.

Sorry but this episode of APE has just transgressed into blog diva-ness. You know Brittany talks to Christina, while both are unemployed reminiscing about the good ole days. BUT, this being a blog, my expectations certainly have not been compromised. Thanks for the morsels you have thrown us before that had something relative to function over form in the contents.

yeah, I think Banal is the key word here. I guess I'm not cultured enough to get Hetherington or others that shoot like him. To me the situations remain banal and flat boring, possibly the written word is required, but then it misses the point, doesn't it? If his pictures have to stand for 1000 of another's words, then I would pick someone else.

Maybe that's why you never called Rob (snap!), because as 'edgy' and artsy as he is, his style doesn't sell the story to the people who buy.

I have always been amazed at the contrast of AH's machine-gun speaking/thinking patterns and the holistic casualness in his image-making. There's an interesting dichotomy of personality going on here. If we were to psychoanalyze the relationship of the cow and the stone wall...hmmm

Not bad, I like the catering portraits, but I'm still looking for someone who's moving forward with this and doesn't do, stand/sit still pose, background is related to person, square format Arbus stuff and usually without the intensity, just see it all the time. I like what Nikola Tamindzic is doing, just wish he didn't do the second curtain flash thing.

As a friend and occasional member of the band of merry gallery hopping bloggers I want to throw in my thumbs up to Mr. Hetherington. Andy has culled the myriad influences of NYC (& Ireland), taken a fairly ubiquitous lighting style, and managed to turn it into a personal vision. And if you can't glean his "quirks" from his blog, in person it all falls into place. It is our collective achilles heels to try to "cover the bases" as photographers and show that we can do anything, anytime. But what seems to be apparent in the marketplace is not the need for a jack of all trades but for vision - "satisfying myself". It is something that all of us shooters can learn from.
